James "Jim" Wood Obituary

James H. “Jim” Wood, affectionately known as “Woodsy” passed away peacefully at his home in Deavertown on March 20, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on March 18, 1943, in Zanesville, Ohio, to the late Alvah and Rodena (Cowan) Wood, Jim was a man of integrity, hard work, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Jim leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his wife of 60 years, Donna (Bush) Wood whom he married on August 4, 1963, and their cherished children: Angela Judson of Zanesville; Lisa (Mike) Dickerson of Moxahala; Robin (Jason) Allen of Crooksville; Misty (Tony) Taylor of Crooksville; and son, Travis (Beth) Wood of Crooksville. His presence will also be mourned by his grandchildren, Elizabeth (Sam) Dailey, Michael (Brie) Dickerson, Cody Dickerson, Nate (Amber) Allen, Raeanna (Dalton) Fitz, Hillary (Tyler) Miller, Preston (Lacie) Wood, Sophie Derry, and Hannah Taylor. Jim was blessed to see the growth of his beautiful great-grandchildren, Bryson, Anslie, Ava, Gregory, Aiden, Owen, Hudson, Azalea, Klayton, and Addie, who brought him undeniable joy. He was a proud graduate of York High School in Deavertown, where Jim's work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the respected owner and operator of Wood Trucking. Prior to this, he was employed with Sidwell & Gould, showcasing his dedication and industry knowledge. Jim was a pillar of the community, serving as York Township Trustee for an impressive 47 years. He took great pride in maintaining the roads throughout the seasons and ensuring safety and accessibility for all residents. Jim's contributions extended beyond his professional endeavors. He was a passionate sportsman, having been recognized as the Ohio High School Athletic Basketball Referee of the Year in 2005 and serving 15 years as a 4-H advisor. His dedication to sports was further honored being named the Perry County Hall of Fame Man of the Year in 2009 and most recently, recognized with the 2024 Crooksville High School Lifetime Achievement Award. As a coach for basketball in Crooksville and Deavertown, Jim influenced many young lives, teaching them the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. His famous sweet potatoes were a testament to his love for gardening, and he took great pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Jim was a long-standing member of the Deavertown United Methodist Church. His beliefs guided him through life's challenges and celebrations alike. An avid Donald Trump supporter, Jim held strong convictions and contributed thoughtfully to political discussions. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvah and Rodena (Cowan) Wood, stepmother Fern Wood, brother William E. Wood, and sister Mary Thomas. Calling hours will be held Friday, March 22, 2024, from 2pm - 4pm and 6pm - 8pm at Ross-Frash Funeral Home, 207 Burley Street, Crooksville. Funeral services will begin at 11am Saturday, March 23, 2024, with calling hours beginning an hour prior at 10am, with Pastor Chad Searles officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in Deavertown United Methodist Cemetery.
