James Eugene
Boring
Jul 27, 1929 — Apr 4, 2016
James Eugene Boring of Crooksville, Ohio passed away on April 4, 2016 at 7:30 a.m. at the Morrison House in Zanesville, Ohio after breaking a hip December 12, 2015. He never walked again and suffered through 2 hip dislocations and 2 major hip surgeries. He was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2010 following an auto accident going to Tom's Ice Cream Bowl in Zanesville.
Jim was born at 236 North Buckeye Street in Crooksville on July 27, 1929. He graduated from Crooksville High School in 1947 where he was produce manager for Kroger's on Main Street. He took night courses at Meredith College in Zanesville from 1947-48. He enlisted in the US Army for four years being promoted to SFC while serving in Korea in the Quartermaster Corps. He received a BS in Commerce from Ohio University in 1956 and was a member of Delta Sigma Pi.
He first worked in Chicago, then Cleveland and Canton for the company we refer to as the "Nielson Ratings," and then on to Nelson McCoy Pottery Company in Roseville as comptroller reporting directly to Nelson McCoy, Jr. He signed 500 employees' paychecks every Friday where ten fountain pens were tied to his desk until it was eventually automated. He wore a tie to work every day due to the CPA in him. He loved bookkeeping but there was an enormous amount of paperwork required for the Federal Government and computer programs soon were available to gather data. After the company was sold, Jim was hired as an accountant for the former Ray Thomas LumberTown of Zanesville, Ohio. While there many of the workers participated in a Dale Carnegie Course and Jim was often remembered for his many stories he presented to the class.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Joanne Elizabeth Boggs-Boring, daughter Julie E. Simpson, granddaughters Haley and Gabrielle, and first cousin James T. Adams of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul Eugene and Emily Adams-Boring and his son-in-law, Matt P. Simpson.
He was an avid golfer who was never content with his game and was always studying how to play better on many local courses with friends on a regular basis and even continued senior league play at New Lexington's Perry Country Club and with Everett Semon, his older companion at Fuller's Fairway every week.
He was a fan of The Ohio State University's basketball and football programs and served as an elite member of the Redcoats assigned to the Club Area Suites at Ohio Stadium. He was a former member of Peerless Lodge # 591 of Crooksville, the Crooksville Jaycees and Crooksville Lions Club serving as treasurer.
A lifetime member of First Hope United Methodist Church of Crooksville, he served as treasurer, administrative board member, youth group co-advisor and participated in the class called Room For Another Member (RFAM).
A Wake will be held for Jim at the church on Friday, April 15 beginning at 1:30 p.m. with luncheon served followed by memories being shared by all.
Burial will be held at the National Veterans Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio at a date to be arranged.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Memorial Fund of First Hope UMC in memory of Jim.
